Sunny Days

Just back from a lovely walk over fields and along the River Eden.
The dogs thoroughly enjoyed it and the gorgeous weather made things perfect!
Dexter was soon off the lead and I'm delighted to say that the whistle still has the magic power of recall. Meanwhile frost on the ground was no deterrent for more swimming for one young dog. Brook was not content with a mear splash - water had to be over her back or it wasn't worth the effort!
No water for Robbie though - more a game of chase. He socialises really well with the others.
I had Paul's dogs Roma and Jaffa with me. Jaffa will soon be 12 yrs old but it's quite clear she's no idea of time - you only have to see her sprint!
He bought her from Weatheral as a rescue dog when she was only 7mths old, having been picked up on the streets of Carlisle. He maintains she's the best dog he's ever had and I can understand why (although she does have some annoying habits!!!).
As for Roma! Ask any dog who keeps order in the house and they won't say ME they'll say Roma. A quick snap here or there is soon given to any dog if she feels things are getting too much for her. The "guilty" dog  gets the message and calms down!
But don't worry - they're only air bites.......she just likes to display her true TERRORier traits! (sorry)

Fran Ardley the Gun Dog Trainer

While Rachel is a trainer and partner in Cumbria Dog Training, my other daughter is a professional in gun dog trainer. Fran has been training dogs for owners from all over  the UK, as well as being asked to judge dogs in in the very male world of trialling. Not bad for a young lady still in her 20's ! Paul's six month old Working Cocker Spaniel Ella loves riding in the cars. She has tremendous spring in her skinny legs and gets into the back of the Hilux with little effort. It's a different story when it's time to leave. She's been trained never to jump out but to be patient and wait for her owner to pick her up, thereby preventing injuries ..... and vets bills !! When are we going to be there Dad ? Boarding dogs Charlie and his brother Alfie are staying with me for a few days, and as can be seen, a ball is something that creates a real bond. These two young dogs are lovely characters. Is this the cool way to carry a ball ? Scarlett, a yo

Meet a Welsh Springer Spaniel

Yesterday I had an all day appointment with an owner who'd travelled from Falkirk, mid point between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Linda brought her beautiful looking Welsh Springer Spaniel to see me and to iron out a few problems. Rosie is, or should I say was, a young dog who liked to lunge at other dogs while out on a walk. Having shown the owner how to correct this habit with Honey then Jaffa, I introduced her to my dog Tilly then Fran's hyper Springer Spaniel Jake, who is energy personified ! By now Rosie was being very blase about the whole thing ! Jake, Ted, Frank, who knows or cares ?! Whatever the name they were of little importance to her and she completed ignored them, much to her owner's delight. Prior to travelling to Morland for lunch, Linda asked me the best way to get Rosie into the back of her car. This cheeky dog preferred to be picked up rather than make the effort herself. A simple demonstration followed by Linda doing it herself brought about alot of la
